Notes on the best ways to view this site

The new Service Pack 2 for Windows XP may automatically block most JavaScript and Flash, along with popup ads.  (Thanks again, Bill).  This article from Macromedia gives a good overview of how Service Pack 2 may affect your internet experience.  Note that the article discusses visits to the Macromedia site specifically -- not the way all sites will behave.

As for us:  Everything on this site is safe.  There are no sneaky scripts or evil plots afoot here.

If you don't enable JavaScript and Flash, you'll miss many website components -- including our ITIL Pop Quiz.

If something else doesn't seem to work properly -- and if you're using Windows XP -- open the Tools menu in Internet Explorer and try adjusting (or turning off) your popup (or, in Bill-speak, Pop-up) blocker settings.

You can enjoy this site and others by adding the website address as an Allowed Site under Pop-up Blocker Settings.

If you're still having problems -- or if you haven't yet been blessed by Windows XP Service Pack 2 -- read on.

JavaScript:

Many sites like ours use JavaScript to process forms, verify information, and enhance your visit in other ways (like our ITIL Pop Quiz).  Because so many sites use JavaScript, generally speaking you should have it enabled in your browser.

Internet Explorer and Netscape will normally have JavaScript enabled by default -- although your settings may have been changed at some point.  If that's the case, follow the directions below to re-enable JavaScript.

If you have Internet Explorer browser 5 or later:
Click the Tools menu and select Internet Options
Click on the "Security" tab at the top
Click on the "Custom Level" radio button down the bottom
On the "Settings" menu:
Scroll to the bottom to "Active scripting" and click the "Enable" radio button
Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the menu
Click the next OK button (at the bottom of the Internet Options page)
Click the "Back" button on your browser to return to the previous page

If you have an older version of Internet Explorer:
Click the View menu and select Options
Click on the "Security" tab at the top
Check the "Run Active X Scripts" box and click OK at the bottom
Click the "Back" button on your browser to return to the previous page

If you have a newer version of Netscape Navigator:
Click the Edit menu and select Preferences
Click on the Advanced "Category" on the left.
Check the "Enable JavaScript" box on the right and click OK at the bottom
Click the "Back" button on your browser to return to the previous page

If you have an older version of Netscape:
Click the Options menu and select Network Preferences
Click on the "Languages" tab at the top
Check the "Enable JavaScript" box and click OK at the bottom
Click the 'Back" button on your browser to return to the previous page

If all of that sounds too complicated:

Here's a simpler solution that usually works:  For Internet Explorer, just change your security settings to Medium.

Macromedia Flash:

Most browsers are set by default to allow you to view Flash and Shockwave animations. If you see any suspiciously blank gray areas on our site, your browser may have been reset to block these.

For Internet Explorer:
Click the Tools menu and select Internet Options
Click on the "Security" tab at the top
Click on the "Custom Level" radio button down the bottom
On the "Settings" menu:
Near the top look for "Run Active X controls and plug-ins" and click the "Enable" radio button
Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the menu
Click the next "OK" button (at the bottom of the Internet Options page)
Click the "Back" button on your browser to return to the previous page

Again, a simpler way to deal with this often works: Follow steps 1 and 2 above, and then just slide the Security Zone selector to Medium.

If you do not have Macromedia Flash, and if you do not see a Download prompt, you can download this free -- and fun -- utility here.

If you need Adobe Reader, you can download this very handy utility here.

If you still have problems with JavaScript or Flash while viewing our site, the problem may lie with your firewall or network settings.  In that case -- well, you have our sincerest sympathy.

Here's a brief description of IT Service Management, brought to you by ITSMP.com – the IT Service Management Portal.

Service Management offers process guidance, and a “road map” to IT solutions.  Service Management does not offer, as many people believe, turnkey solutions.  Because each business and IT environment is different, IT Service Management can provide guidelines and best practices which can be adapted to a wide range of circumstances.

IT Service Management can help align IT services with the current and future needs of the business and its customers.  IT Service Management is about managing change across the organization.  While Project Management focuses only on a particular project, Service Management is focused on integration of all projects with all departments to provide cohesion and consistency within the entire organization.

Where should an organization begin with IT Service Management?  This depends on the maturity level of the IT organization as a whole and the maturity of the individual Service Management processes.  It also depends on the strategic goals set by a particular organization.

IT Service Management processes are divided into two core areas:  IT Service Delivery and IT Service Support.

There are five core Service Support and five core Service Management Service Delivery processes within IT Service Management.  These core IT Service Management processes relate to the provision of the support of services to the User.  The five IT Service Support processes are:  Incident Management, Change Management, Release Management, Problem Management and Configuration Management.  The five IT Service Delivery processes are:  Service Level Management, Financial Management, Capacity Management, Availability Management and Continuity Management.
